The manufacturing and fabrication of high-value systems that incorporate functional nanomaterials or nanometre-scale elements is rapidly becoming one of the most important technological innovations across almost all existing industry sectors and represents a necessary prerequisite to the emergence of new high-value industries. In order to harness the full potential of these advanced nanofabrication technologies, however, the nanoscale processes and the building blocks that they give rise to must be fully integrated into the complex, large-scale systems and practices of existing industries.
